NDIS questions

  • The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) provides funding for supports and services directly to eligible participants. People with disability have more control and choice over how, when and where their supports are provided.

    The focus of the NDIS is to support participants to become more independent and achieve their goals, including developing skills for day-to-day living.

  • The NDIA stands for the National Disability Insurance Agency. It's the government agency that manages the NDIS to make sure it supports a better life for people with disability and their families and carers.

  • Eligibility for the NDIS depends on a few different things such as:

    • Age: You need to be under 65 years at the time of your application

    • Residency: You need to be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or a New Zealand citizen who holds a Protected Special Category Visa

    • Disability: You must have a permanent disability that significantly affects how you can communicate, move, care for yourself, or manage your life.

    • Early Intervention: You might be eligible if early intervention would substantially improve your functioning, or delay or decrease a decline in functioning, for you or your child.

  • The NDIS funds reasonable and necessary support and equipment that a person with disability needs. The funding supports you to pursue your goals and aspirations; increase your independence; increase your social and economic participation and to develop your capacity to take part in the community.

  • NDIS funding doesn’t cover general everyday living expenses that people without disability would be required to pay, such as train travel, rent, groceries, mobile phone or movie tickets.

  • You do! Your NDIS plan will tell you how much funding you will receive for each support but it’s your decision how funds are managed. You can choose to manage your funds yourself or nominate the NDIS, a registered provider or someone else you trust to do it for you. With the NDIS you’ll always retain control over how, when and where your supports are provided

  • People applying for National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) funding must be older than six years of age and younger than 65 years of age. If you’re an older person with disability, you can access services and support through the aged care system.

  • A National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) plan outlines your goals and aspirations for living a full and equal life. It also names what services or supports you need.

    Plans can take into account your current needs and future goals.

  • Yes you can.

    It is important that you’re happy with your service provider and getting the support you need.

  • Yes, you might like your family members included a lot, or a little - the choice is yours.

  • Generally not. The NDIS will only pay direct family members to provide supports in exceptional circumstances. For example, if you are in a remote area with no services available to you.

    If you have questions about this or would like to seek approval for a special circumstance, we recommend that you contact your NDIS Planner to discuss.

  • Yes you can! For example, if you have been allocated 30 hours of individual support you could split the allocation among multiple providers.

  • The out-of-pocket expenses that would be incurred if you went on a holiday, such as transportation (like car travel, flights or rail), meals, accommodation and sightseeing are not covered by the NDIS.

  • The important thing to understand is that how your plan is managed can affect the providers you can use and how you can claim. If you choose plan management or self-management, you can use registered or non-registered providers

  • A service agreement is a legal agreement between you and your service provider/s which outlines the support that will be provided for you under the NDIS. It describes how and when the support will be provided, as well as the costs and the fees you need to pay.
